It happens to all of us. An innocent lunch with a friend turns into panic. Whether it was an unnoticed condiment, or a cross contaminating bread crumb, we all accidentally ingest Gluten. I for one know that I could be more careful, and strict with where I allow myself to eat. Life is tough at times and I like to do my best to keep myself feeling like everyone else.
When I do make a mistake, here is my top 5 tips for dealing with being Glutened.
1) Fluids!
I start with a lot of water. The hope here is to wash out the bad and get your system back on track. My other go to fluid is Kombucha. This fermented tea contains live bacteria to help restore your own that may be damaged from Gluten ingestion. My favorite brands are GT’s and Townshend’s. I am addicted to Kombucha, so a little extra in times of need are no problem. You can even make it at home!
2) DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice)
Think of it as the tums of the natural health section of your supermarket. DGL comes in chewable tabs, and many take it to ease an upset stomach. For me this is a take daily supplement to aid my damaged digestive system. My favorite brand is Natural Factors.
3) Fruits and Veggies!
Gentle food is something I like to introduce slowly as I am coming back from being Glutened. Banana, Papaya, Apples, and Salad. This will give your stomach something good to chew on while you recover.
4) GI Fortify
This is something relatively new to my basket. I used to take something called Intestinal Repair Complex. Now I take this powder with a full glass of water. It contains many natural supplements to aid digestion, and a bit of fiber as well. I honestly see great results from taking this powder. My stomach becomes calm and things start to get better. If you know what I mean.
5) Aloe Vera Juice
If you can stand the taste, Aloe Vera Juice is a good liquid for the tummy. I did not put this in my liquids section because… well… I don’t like drinking large quantities of it. This juice should help balance the acidity in your stomach and promote better digestion overall.
That wraps it up. What would you suggest I add to my list?
