Widmer Omission Gluten Free Beer Review

May 2, 2012 Seattle Gluten Free Uncategorized 11 Comments

This is it. This is the beer you will love. I should say, this is the Gluten Free beer that you will love. This past weekend we stopped into The Bier Stein in Eugene to have a post race celebration. I had planned to be stuck drinking a cider or two, but was very happy to see a Gluten Free section. Upon closer inspection I noticed that both Omission Gluten Free beers from Widmer were available. Currently you can only pick this beer up in Oregon. I really was not expecting to see it out on the town.

Omission is brewed with Barley, but the Gluten is removed early in the process bringing it well below the 20ppm considered safe by many. You can even use their website to find out how many ppm of Gluten are present in the batch that you are drinking. They test all beer that leaves the brewery.

This beer tastes right. Sorghum brew typically just does not cut it. Widmer took the time, and invested in this beer. Ask your specialty beer store to keep their eyes on its availability for you.

I am loving this beer right now!  It’s available at Bottleworks in Wallingford on 45th.

Thanks for the feedback Kristian. Man, it sure is a lot tastier than the sorghum beers. Do you have celiac disease? Some people are concerned that it may have some gluten – though well below the 20ppm guideline.

SGF, you tried this beer, right?  Did you have any bad reaction to it? I have celiac disease and have a bottle of both, but am unsure about trying them.  Thank you.

Sorry for the delay! I’ve been gone. I don’t have a severe reaction to Omission – though some of the fuzzy feeling of being “buzzed” may confuse things. I do recommend Harvester Beer from portland. No barley and pretty tasty.

Well, I broke down and tried the Omission lager.  It tastes fantastic. Reminds me of the good old days before I was celiac.  The down side, sure enough I’m having a reaction to it.  I started feeling dizzy, my left arm went numb, eyesight in right eye went blurry, and stomach gurgling.  These are my typical early symptoms, with the less pleasant stuff starting the next day and lasting for weeks.   I’m hoping I stopped in time (only drank about 1/3rd of the bottle) to avoid the setback for weeks.

Yipes – very sorry to hear you had a bad reaction. I felt fairly normal, after 2, other than a slight buzzed dizzy (which you’d expect from beer). It is very interesting guaging the PPM that will affect a celiac. 20ppm is “supposed” to be safe and this beer I believe is supposed to be something like 6ppm. There are a few better sorghum based beers coming out that hopefully will treat you better and not taste terrible like the rest of them :(

I have tried 3 barley based “gluten free” beers in total, and I reacted to all of them.  Daura, Brunehaut and now Omission.  I will not try a 4th.  I seem to be particularly sensitive.  I still feel like I’m on a ship pitching with the waves.  So far no gut issues.  Fingers crossed…

Yeah I do ok with the sorghum and rice beers, but they aren’t that tasty.  The Dogfish Head Tweason’ale is pretty nice, but difficult to obtain as demand is higher than the supply.  Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wine and cider.  Be careful.  Cheers!  ;-)

Harvester’s Experiment Ale IPA is AMAZING! And from a DEDICATED GF facility! (And I’m an IPA snob – even my gluten consuming husband loved it!)

Sarah! I just had that IPA. I am starting to like beer again and loving it. After so many bad reactions to beer prior to my diagnosis I had a mental block to enjoying any of it. Keep an eye on Rain City Ales in Ballard – they make a pretty good beer and once they are really producing it should only get better.

Thanks for the tip :) I’ll look for it!

Of course, right after I mention it, they had to shut down. Shucks.
